Acupuncture in Rocky Hill

As a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to address a range of conditions. These include anxiety, stress, pain, nausea, addiction, insomnia and many others.

Acupuncture is based on the assertion that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of the body’s life energy, or “qi,” can create health problems. Acupuncturists insert ultrathin needles to specific acupuncture points throughout the body to restore the flow of qi, promote healing and induce relaxation.

According to TCM theory, there are more than 1000 acupuncture points on the body, each lying on a meridian or pathway. Every meridian is associated with a different organ system.

We use the electrograph computerized system. This method allows us to measure the qi levels through bioelectrical impedance. Based on the results, we use needling on patients specifically to their levels—whether they’re high or low.

Meridians can be mapped throughout the body. These pathways exist in corresponding pairs, and each meridian has many acupuncture points along its path. If we find a specific meridian to be high or low, we needle patients accordingly. And they would come in periodically for that.

The purpose of those sessions is to balance their energy levels and their meridian flow. That approach is more of the preventative wellness aspect versus treating an ongoing knee problem with acupuncture.

After developing an interest in acupuncture, Dr. Italia completed an extensive certification program in acupuncture. He also completed an additional 70-hour certification program in NADA (ear acupuncture) for pain control, addiction, detox and other issues.

We offer preventative acupuncture for patients who want to improve their health. Patients also can see us if they want to address a particular condition such as headaches, back pain, pain control and many more. Dr. Italia mainly does musculoskeletal acupuncture.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

One theory is that acupuncture works by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals. Acupuncture is also thought to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls various functions in the body. Another benefit of acupuncture is it releases the chemicals that regulate blood flow and pressure, decreases inflammation and relaxes the brain.

What About Those Needles?

We understand that some people are anxious about the needles used in acupuncture. These are not large hypodermic needles! Instead, the needles are thin like hair. Most people don’t even feel them being inserted. If you have acupuncture on your ear or fingertip, you may feel a slight prick, but that’s it. Dr. Italia has never had anyone complain that it hurts.

If you still don’t like the idea of needles, we can reduce the number of needles and use acupressure on specific points.
